Our DesmoDue Race Bike
This is our race bike that we enter into the Ducati Sporting Club's Desmo Due race series.
It started life as a 1996 Ducati 600SS with a 583cc carb engine. This was stripped down and had all the road kit removed and a 674cc big-bore kit fitted to it. The forks and rear shock were resprung to suit and the bike reassembled with a cut-down airbox, race clip-ons and a modified SS fairing and bellypan.
For the next season, the Desmo Due rules changed to two classes, one for 583cc carb engines and the other for the later 618cc fuel injected engines. We decided to run in the 618cc class, so we fitted an engine from a 620SSie to the frame. We kept the original SS tank and swapped the fuel pump for an FI unit to suit. The exhausts were changed to twin pipes, originally Remus Carbon hi-level end cans, with 900SS downpipes to increase gas flow.
Additional upgrades have included uprating the forks to later Showa items, which also meant a change of calipers and front axle. A FG Gubbelini rear shock with remote reservoir has helped with suspension adjustment. Braking was improved by fitting Brembo radial race brake master cylinder, and we had to fit a matching Brembo radial race clutch master cylinder to match! We fitted the lighter wheels both front and rear and an aluminium swingarm from a 900SS that was almost half the weight of the steel swingarm. To reduce weight further we replaced the battery for a much smaller item from a 996RS.
After a big crash at Castle Combe, the bike was again rebuilt but this time with a 999 fairing and a Triumph seat unit that we had laying around. We fitted an AIM LCD dash which has rev counter, temp display, lap timer and lap counter all built in. The exhausts were replaced with Remus Titanium hi-level end cans as these were lighter than the carbon versions.
